Position: Farm Hand (Crop Production Skills Training)
Location: Farming with Friends Farm Site (2317 Ira Road, Akron OH 44333)Reports to: Farm Staff/Executive Director
Position Overview
The Farming with Friends Farm Hand role is a hands-on training position focused on developing foundational agricultural and workplace skills. Farm Hands work alongside staff, peers, and volunteers to learn technical crop production tasks while building confidence, routine, and meaningful connections in an inclusive farm environment.
This position supports individuals with disabilities in gaining practical farming skills, increasing independence, and preparing for future leadership or employment opportunities—empowering all abilities to grow together.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Crop Production Skills
- Participate in crop production activities such as planting, watering, weeding, harvesting, and basic bed maintenance
- Learn to safely use hand tools and farm equipment appropriate to skill and ability level
- Assist with post-harvest tasks such as washing, sorting, bundling, and storing produce
- Follow established farm routines, safety practices, and task instructions
Workplace Readiness & Skill Building
- Practice punctuality, task completion, and responsibility
- Follow one- to multi-step directions with staff support as needed
- Develop problem-solving and adaptability within daily farm activities
- Build stamina for outdoor, hands-on work
Teamwork & Community
- Work cooperatively with staff, peers, and volunteers
- Practice respectful communication and positive workplace behavior
- Contribute to a welcoming, inclusive farm environment
Ability & Support Requirements
This role is designed for individuals who are building foundational vocational skills. With reasonable accommodations as appropriate, Farm Hands must be able to:
- Walk independently or with minimal support across outdoor farm terrain
- Remain oriented to assigned work areas on the farm with staff guidance
- Follow simple to multi-step instructions with verbal, visual, or hands-on support
- Communicate needs, questions, or responses using spoken language, AAC, or other functional communication methods
- Perform basic to moderate fine motor tasks such as planting seeds, harvesting produce, or handling tools
- Tolerate outdoor work in varying weather conditions with appropriate supports
- Participate safely in farm activities with supervision
